10 Ways to Boost Family Mental Well-Being in the New Year

As we turn the page to a new year, it’s a great time to check in not just on our calendars, but on our family’s well-being. At Five Acres, its mission is to promote safety, well-being, and permanency for children and families, and a big part of that mission starts at home, with everyday moments of connection, support and care.

Kate McGevna, Five Acres director of training and organizational development, shares mental wellness tips for the new year. McGevna oversees the Five Acres’ Wear Your Heart initiative that increases access to early mental health through parent education, resources, community linkages, and referrals.

“These 10 tips offer simple, practical ways to strengthen relationships, build resilience and support your family’s mental health all year long, helping every child feel safe, seen and supported,” said McGevna.

Start the year strong with these simple habits:
Share gratitude daily: Begin the year by sharing one thing each family member is grateful for. Gratitude helps shift focus to positive aspects of life.
Stick to family routines: Predictable routines reduce stress and provide a sense of security for everyone, especially children.
Make time for connection: Schedule regular family time, meals, game nights, or walks, to strengthen bonds and emotional support.
Practice mindful moments: Take a few minutes each day to breathe together or notice something pleasant in your environment. This helps regulate stress.
Encourage open communication: Create a safe space for family members to share feelings without judgment. Use phrases like “I hear you” or “Tell me more.”
Limit screen time: Set boundaries for devices and encourage activities that promote face-to-face interaction and creativity.
Move together: Physical activity boosts mood and reduces anxiety. Try family walks, dancing, or simple stretching.
Build resilience skills: Use grounding skills, finding joy in simple things, and positive self-talk Plan for fun: Include enjoyable activities in your calendar, celebrations, outings, or simple rituals that bring joy.
Model self-care: Parents set the tone. Show your family that taking breaks, resting, and caring for mental health is important.

Caring for family mental well-being doesn’t require perfection or a complete lifestyle overhaul—just intentional moments, honest conversations, and routines that make everyone feel safe and connected.

As you move through the year, choose one or two of these ideas to start, and build from there in ways that work for your household. When families feel supported in this way, it reflects the heart of Five Acres’ mission so children and families can feel safe, thrive, and live in happy homes, today and for years to come.
